Ten smoothie ingredients to extend your healthy lifespan
About six years ago, with a strong warning from my doctor, I started aggressively getting my health in order by losing a bunch of weight and diving into a workout program. Since then, I have been slowly evolving my exercise and nutrition program. A key element of my nutrition for the last few years has been my daily smoothie.
I find a smoothie the easiest and quickest way to get in a lot of my target ingredients and supplements. And having it first thing each day just makes me feel healthy and like I’m off to a great start!
Alright, here are the ingredients in my unusual elixir:
- Broccoli Sprouts: It’s been known for a while that eating cruciferous vegetables is associated with lower cancer rates and better health. Broccoli sprouts have a dramatically higher concentration of the chemicals believed behind this benefit. I’ve been following Dr. Rhonda Patrick’s suggestions about how to prepare them for maximum benefit. I buy them at Whole Foods 12 at a time (they offer a case discount). After heating them the way she recommends, I pack them into little Tupperwares and freeze them. Then I drop one of these cubes into my blender with a little bit of water and blend that before adding other ingredients.
I recently discovered that the company that supplies my Whole Foods sells the sprouts by the pound via mail order, so I plan to try than in an attempt to reduce the plastic waste.
